The Flap is an integral part of running eduScrum.
It is the heart and brain of the project and must be accessible to all students.
The Flap show the chronological movement of a project, while making communication and organization transparent.
When a project begins students are shown how to create a Flap. The categories that will help them organize their new projects. They will build their stories and tasks on the left, keep the celebration criteria visible and leave room to show progress and real time feedback. To accurately plan a project all students need to access the Flap, be able to manipulate it and view it.
Pre-pandemic I would have divided my white board walls into sections and let students set up their own boards. They would have had to measure to make sure all categories fit, determine which categories need more or less space and determine the lay out. However, with half of my students online “zooming” in and the other half socially distanced behind plexiglass walls the way we used to do work is no longer an option.
The two options that I found most viable for an online flap were Jamboard, a new extension in the google for education suite and ideaboardz.com.
Jamboard is a virtual white board built for collaboration. Students can write post it notes, move them and communicate on a blank wall. This is ideal for ideation, basic collaboration and brainstorming exercises.
To make jam board usable for a sprint I decided to draw out the entire Flap and make a template for my students. Using the box tool it was simplistic to create a grid and label them.
I then invited students to make a copy of my template and customize it to their groups needs. Students have several different color post its which is helpful for organizing stories and tasks. Students can add text boxes, images and shapes to further customize their boards.
My 8th grade students were excited to explore this new surface. It’s an essential tool for creating transparency between groups as well as giving the teacher access to check in to see the progress of the project.
After hunting for the perfect tool I happened upon Ideaboardz.com.
IdeaBoardz is another type of online white board that utilizes post it notes for communication and collaboration. You cannot draw a grid in this website, but it does have several attirbutes that are effective for online collaboration.
You can generate as many post its as you need. When I was playing with creating my flap I could create headings and then use post its to build my stories and tasks. The post its can be manipulated and moved under different topics which allows the group to see the momentum in their project. I really like that students can up or down vote ideas right on the post its. The URL can be shared among group members so this can create a truly collaborative surface for each group.
Many students that felt that the Flap in Jamboard appeared to busy loved the feel of this website. It could be useful for students that get overwhelmed when a surface is to busy.
Below are some captures of what it would look like if a current project were in motion. This is just a snap shot of their work in this time and place. They may have similar ideas on their Flap’s, but none of them are identical and they change daily.
